Welcome back! Happy New Year babes!! 2019 is here and I am all for it. So glad to you back to kick off the year with us – and what better way to get back in the swing of things than with another amazing Girl Boss interview? This week for Feature Friday, we are sharing everything you need to know about an incredible gem currently based in the Bay! I met her in Buffalo during a blogger meet up and always thought she had one of the most kind and soft spirits. Not to mention, she takes the most amazing photos! Her outfits, her photoshoot backgrounds, and her smile is what makes her so special. I asked her to be in my diary because she is a woman who is showing the world, that you can have both. Working a full time job and running a life and style blog is absolute goals! She is so inspiring! Read all about how she does it all in our interview. Get to know…

Current City: San Francisco Bay Area, California

Hometown: Bangalore, India

Full-time job: Neuroscientist

Hey Sushmitha! Welcome to The Boss Diary! So glad you’re here. Tell us all about how you started your blog Missminussized.

Thank you so much for having me, Nkay! My blog was born out of creative necessity in 2014, when I was a super stressed out second year PhD student in the UB School of Medicine. Academic research is so serious and taxing, so I was looking for a creative outlet to unwind with. At the time, I’d been sharing my budget-friendly weekend outfits on Instagram for a few months to positive feedback (even if just from friends!). I’ve always loved writing, so starting the blog was a natural next step.

I love seeing all your fashion posts on Instagram. The Bay area looks so beautiful! What made you move out west, and how has your life changed since the move?

Thank you so much! Living in the Bay Area is definitely a treat. 🙂 Can’t believe it’s been over a year since I moved!

I’d be lying if I didn’t start with the weather for why I moved- Being from India, I’m not made for the cold and was counting down the days to when we moved out west haha! We also have a lot of friends and some family here in the Bay Area. And finally, the Bay Area has the perfect mix of everything we love about a place- the ocean, the mountains and big cities!

The move has changed my life in a lot of ways- we get to do a lot more all year round since the weather is so temperate. Our weekends are full of beach days, hikes and roadtrips and it’s been the best! In terms of my career, I now work as a postdoctoral neuroscientist at UCSF and it’s so inspiring working around so many giants in my field of research at such a reputed institution. I’ve been more productive as a blogger as well as I’m no longer struggling to shoot in the freezing cold and snow haha! Finally, having some of our closest friends close-by has helped living away from family a bit easier.

Ok so I have to ask, who takes all your photos? You have so much amazing content! Do you plan your posts, or you just kinda roll with it?

My amazing husband takes all of my pictures, so equal credit goes to him for all of my content! I definitely have to plan my posts to keep up with campaign deadlines, especially since I’ve had the fortune of growing in terms of the volume of brand partnerships since moving to the Bay Area. Since my husband and I both have full time jobs in science, we can shoot only on weekends. I make sure to schedule and prioritize our shoots each week so there’s a mix of brand campaigns’ content and organic posts meant for community-building and conversations.

Everyone has a purpose, and it’s so refreshing to find women who are truly living out their dreams. How would you define your own purpose?

Agreed, it’s so beautiful to see women living out their dreams! My purpose seems to be ever-evolving, but I would broadly describe it as wanting to lead the most positively impactful life possible. Whether it’s in my research career studying neurological diseases towards a potential therapy for suffering people, my blogging career that hopes to inspire confidence and laughter through relatable content and silly puns or my recent few attempts to have political/social conversations via my social platforms, I find meaning in applying myself to others’ benefit.

Who are some of your favorite designers or female entrepreneurs that you look up to?

Ah, so many! I’m not into designer fashion, but I do admire successful entrepreneurship in women. Oprah Winfrey’s number one on my list, I find her story of struggle -> success -> sharing that success with people in need so inspiring.

Tell me one thing that most people may not know about you.

I used to have an irrational fear of driving that’s gotten better in recent years, but I still avoid freeways like the plague!

What would you say is your biggest challenge that you have overcome through this year?

This year, I think I really came to terms with how much power I had given this palm-sized device living in my pocket known as the smartphone! I was spending too much time on social media in random, disorganized blocks and filing it away in my mind as ‘blog time’. I had to re-think the way I handle screen time and now spend a disciplined but dedicated hour every night taking care of all of my blog and social content-related phone needs.

Name one thing that your hometown city is known for that some people may not know.

Bangalore is known as the ‘Garden City’ of India- it had the prettiest parks and the best weather while I was growing up! Sadly, over-population and climate change have slowly chipped away at that.

What would the “18-year old you,” say to you today?

To not despair that I’m sacrificing my creative interests for the demands of a more practical career because I’d eventually find a way to have both!

Before you go, what is one piece of advice you would give to women out there who want to start their own fashion blog or become a blogger while working a full-time job?

My biggest piece of advice would be to just take the plunge and start! Waiting for this or that while working a full-time job can hold one up forever, so the best approach is to make the most of the current situation and work with what you have, be it the ideal amount of spare time, photography gear and/or Instagram following. The right time is always now!
