How To Be A Baker: Meet Amanda Bernardini

“I was able to build a clientele through doing just the cookies and an amazing opportunity on Allen St popped up that I just couldn’t say no to. I was able to make this opportunity work and still keep my day job.”

Good Morning and Happy Friday! Today’s feature is going to inspire you to truly chase after your dreams. She is beautiful inside and out, and is an incredibly hard worker. I have seen her transformation, and I can honestly say, it’s an incredible honor to feature her in my blog. For all of my aspiring bakers out there, this is a girl you wanna get to know! She built her business from the ground up, and completely re-modeled her bakery from start to finish. I admire her for her hard work, and the ability to learn and grow as a new business owner, even though she wasn’t completely ‘ready’ to start a business, but did so passionately with determination. I’m obsessed with her – and you will be too. Grab a cup girl, and read today’s interview with our newest CEO! Get to know….

Hi Amanda! Welcome to The Boss Diary! So glad you’re here. Tell me all about how your new business, Mundy Cakes, and how you started.

I have been baking ever since I was a little girl. Both my mother and grandmother were avid bakers so I learned a lot from them. Growing up, I would always bake and decorate as a hobby and I found it to be so fun and relaxing. I started off by baking out of my house for friends and family and eventually I had enough business where I was able to start selling beyond that. I utilized social media and focused in on sugar cookies. I was able to build a clientele through doing just the cookies and an amazing opportunity on Allen St popped up that I just couldn’t say no to. I was able to make this opportunity work and still keep my day job. I have leaned on social media a lot as a means of free advertising in order to get my business off the ground.

I love watching your Insta stories, not only because you show us your delicious cookies, but you also add your own personality. In what ways do you think sharing your personality with your community is so important?

I believe that people want to get to know the person behind the business and form a personal connection with others. I am not perfect and this journey has been filled with many obstacles. I have also had an overwhelming amount of help and support from others. Sharing the journey and letting people know that it is possible to follow your dream I believe spreads inspiration. There have been many times where I’ve been in a creative “rut” and connecting with others in similar positions trying to do exciting things is what has motivated me to keep pushing.

Starting out as a new business owner and remodeling an entire new storefront can be a lot of work. Are there any major challenges that you had to overcome pre-opening? If so, how did you overcome them?

Pressing “go” was the hardest thing for me. I am somewhat of a perfectionist and I wanted to have everything figured out before I opened. I quickly realized that would never happen. I would say that I definitely wasn’t ready and I didn’t have all the answers to running a business when I opened but it got to the point where it was now or never. I am so happy I did that when I did because I realized its okay not to have all the answers. We continue to learn and grow every single day and that is what is most important.

Everyone has a purpose, and it’s so refreshing to find women who are truly living out their dreams. How would you define your own purpose?

I would say I still struggle with “finding my purpose” but the constant feedback from others have been so personally motivating for me. If I had to say what I find most rewarding about this business  is putting a smile on people’s faces when they taste something sweet and being able to inspire others to follow their dreams. (Because quite frankly, if I can do it, so can you 😉)

Who are some of your favorite female creatives or business women that you look up to?

Christina Tosi (Milk Bar) for her fearlessness and creativity, and above all, my mother for her selflessness and amazing work ethic.

Tell me one thing that most people may not know about you.

When I first started decorating cookies, I became obsessed with poker and watched 100’s of hours of poker tape while decorating so I could learn the game. There’s nothing more I would rather do on a Saturday night than play in a giant hold em tournament.

Name one thing that your hometown city is known for that some people may not know.

Many may not know this but Buffalo is home of a very tasty bakery, Mundy Cakes, located at 220 allen st. 😉

What would the “18-year old you,” say to you today?

Stop caring what other people think.

Before you go, what is one piece of advice you would give to women out there who want to start their own business?

My main piece of advice to any business woman, mother or not, it to stay focused on the small wins. If you look at the big picture, it becomes overwhelming. Make yourself small goals. Even when you have “bad business days” try to see the positives in it (there are ALWAYS  positives). Also, its never too late and you’re never too busy to start your business. If you are passionate about something and you LOVE it, you will be successful. Just keep doing it every day, enjoying the ride, and good things will come.
