Girl Boss Status: Licensed Esthetician, Certified Lash Artist & 3x Certified Makeup Artist and Educator
Hi Marie! Welcome to The Boss Diary! So glad you’re here. Tell me all about how you started as a Licensed Esthetician, Lash Artist & Makeup Artist.
Thank you so much for having me! I am such a fan of your blog and everything you do! I went to school for Esthetics in 2012 after a really tough breakup with someone who was extremely mentally and emotionally abusive. It was a bit of a ‘come to Jesus’ moment where I realized I had been building my life around this man and had nothing to show for myself once it was all said and done. I’ve struggled with my skin for all my life so Esthetics was a nice way for me to learn a trade that would not only help myself, but other women and men dealing with skin issues too. I fell in love with makeup not too long after that; believe it or not, I was a total tomboy most of my life and refused to wear makeup until I was in my mid-twenties.
I love watching your makeup tutorials and getting to see the before and afters. In what ways do you think these videos has helped you grow your business?
Thank you! They are a lot of fun to make! I starting posting makeup looks for the love and fun of it, without realizing how many people would see it I guess! Every once in a while I meet someone new who tells me how much they love my videos and I’m caught by surprise, every time. It’s still crazy to me that absolute strangers follow, and enjoy, my page! Along with posting makeup looks, I love to share photos of my work on clients, educational posts/stories, and I try to share bits and pieces of my personal life as well to connect with my audience. I’ve built a lot of friendships off of Instagram so I’d say it’s a combination of making friends and sharing my knowledge that helps to spread the word and grow my business.
Starting out as a beauty consultant and finding the right clients can be a difficult process, especially in the beginning. What steps are you taking to grow your business, and what steps did you take to land your first client?
Building clientele is incredibly difficult. I taught the Esthetic and Makeup Designory programs at The Salon Professional Academy for 2 years so many of my first clients were graduates of the school that I’ve become friends with over the years. They are so supportive! As for marketing, I utilize Facebook Ads a lot and make sure to keep a rapport with my social media followers. When you consistently show an elevated quality of work, knowledge in your craft and truly connect with people, it becomes a snowball effect!
Everyone has a purpose, and it’s so refreshing to find women who are truly living out their dreams.. How would you define your own purpose?
My purpose seems to evolve throughout the years. I love to help women feel beautiful in their own skin and that has definitely been an anchor throughout my career. Recently, I’ve become a lot more open with my mental health struggles as well as traumatizing things that have happened in my past and I do my best to be an advocate for those who may not feel they have a voice. Overall, I’d say my purpose is to spread as much love and support to those that need it as I can. I just want to help people, however I can; whether that’s with a makeover, a voluminous set of lashes, making someone laugh, or speaking out against injustices.
Who are some of your favorite business women or entrepreneurs that you look up to?
There are so many incredible women that I look up to! Hilaree Brand of My Brand Lashes, Lindy Williams of EBL Lashes and Kim Jaynes of Borboleta Beauty are such inspirations. Boss babes that built an empire out of nothing!
Tell me one thing that most people may not know about you.
I’ve struggled with really bad anxiety for my entire life. Meeting new people, engaging in conversation with people I don’t know and promoting myself/my business are daily struggles for me… My anxiety is almost always through the roof. I force myself every day to push past it. Some days, I fail. But I always get back up and keep moving towards my goals!
Where can someone find you if they want to get a makeover or learn more about makeup? Are there any special services that you offer?
My studio is attached to my home so if anyone is interested in scheduling an appointment, they can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or message me on my Instagram! The services I offer are eyelash extensions, makeup applications, facial waxing as well as one-on-one makeup lessons. My specialty is definitely volume eyelash extensions!
Name one thing that your hometown city is known for that some people may not know.
Buffalo is beautiful and vibrant! Haha I think we’ve gotten a bad rap over the years and seeing the resurgence of our city has been absolutely incredible! There is so much to see and do now!
What would the “18-year old you,” say to you today?
18 year-old-me…. Oh boy… I would remind myself of how far I’ve come. When I was 18, I was naïve and totally lost. I had NO clue what to do with my life and had zero motivation to find out. I’ve come really far. But – we are our own worst enemies and most days end with feeling like I didn’t do enough. So I would tell myself to keep hustling because at 18, I would have never imagined I could do all that I’ve accomplished.
Before you go, what is one piece of advice you would give to women out there who want to start their own business or become a licensed esthetician?
Start today. Stop putting it off. If you have a vision and a passion, you can make it happen. Women are the strongest creatures on this planet and we can do ANYTHING. Find a support system. Cut out anyone who makes you feel like you can’t do it. Come up with a plan and make it happen – step by step, day by day.. It’s intimidating and downright terrifying but waking up day after day to work at a job you absolutely hate is by far scarier.
Do it. Make it happen.
- Summer activity: Drinking an ice cold beer on an outdoor patio with good food and good friends.
- Restaurant in your neighborhood: La Divina. I LOVE Mexican food!
- Podcast: I should probably say a business related podcast but that would be a lie… And That’s Why We Drink is definitely my favorite. I love paranormal and true crime things, plus the girls who host it are hilarious!
- Lipstick: I can’t choose just one! Charlotte Tilbury’s Kim KW (perfect nude for my skin tone) and Stila’s Liquid Lipstick in Patina.

- Disney Movie: Emperor’s New Groove.
