“What’s her name with the pretty hair? She’s so funny!” – me back in college when I shamelessly pointed to this girl sitting across the room.  Honestly, this woman is so funny! I met this gem in college, and really started to get to know her while we both lived on the same floor in our dorm. She was the absolute craziest and funniest girl on campus. Also, her southern accent was literally everything. You’ll fall in love with her by the time you read her full interview. She talks about how she got started with her fitness journey, and how she got to where she is today. This Girl Boss makes weightlifting look easy! Also, she and I share the same favorite Disney movie and travel destination. Don’t miss her list of favorites at the end!

Hi Crystal! Welcome to The Boss Diary! So glad you’re here. Tell me all about how you started your fitness journey.

I got started back in 2011 in grad school with some friends of mine doing intense HIIT training. I later found out the workouts were pretty much CrossFit. My husband and I joined a Crossfit gym in Metro Detroit when we graduated. I loved the workouts because they were so intense but none of them lasted longer than 30 min so I was all for it. There were so many movements to learn and improve on that I never got bored.

I started to really get into the Olympic lifts because they were so technical and really required extra time outside of class of learn them. I made the switch from Crossfit to Olympic Weightlifting in 2014 and have loved it ever since!

Besides lifting weights like a boss, you also work as a Chiropractor. How and when did you get into this profession?

My mother hurt her back when I was in undergrad and I suggested she try a Chiropractor. I knew a little about the profession because my ex’s sister was one. I never thought I’d choose the Chiropractic path. It chose me. Her doctor invited us to a dinner talk about what Chiropractic was and I was into the message. The message that the body itself is healing, and with good nutrition, exercise, and adjustments , you can thrive. While there are diseases that can happen to anyone, there are some we can prevent by living holistically. Currently my husband and I see clients within a couple Crossfit gym.

Now let’s talk about your new YouTube Channel! First of all, you’re hilarious! Tell us more about your channel and why you decided to create one.

So I decided to create a You Tube channel because 1. I enjoyed IG stories so much 2. I wanted to share my fitness journey and offer content that people would find useful. I’m a Chiropractor, who lifts and has coached others on nutrition, crossfit and weightlifting. There’s not many WOC in that  specific space.

Everyone has a purpose, and it’s so refreshing to find women who are truly living out their dreams. How would you define your own purpose?

Great question! I haven’t thought about a purpose. However if I think about as if I’m standing on the outside. My purpose is to inspire others to have fun with their fitness/health journey. I find most get so caught up with the “right” things to eat or do. They get caught up with the scale that they become overwhelmed. I see lifters and crosffitters who have a handle on nutrition and fitness already, but they lack the knowledge of how to recover and rehabilitate. If you want longevity, you have to take care of the whole.

Who are some of your favorite women or entrepreneurs that you look up to and have inspired your work?

I love Cara Heads-Slaughter she’s an Olympian Weightlifter who is super positive and a great coach. Jade Darmawangsa. She’s an up and coming 17yr old entrepreneur on YouTube. Meg Gallagher (@MegSquats ) Body positive powerlifter, entrepreneur.

Tell me one thing that most people may not know about you.

I’m the biggest introvert ever but I’m not shy. It just takes a lot of energy to socialize LMAO.

Name one thing that your hometown city is known for that some people may not know.

Memphis is known for the dance style “jookin”.

What would the “21-year old you,” say to you today?

Sis, (nevermind, I know we’re not sister it’s a thing we say now) You will have some major tragedies coming soon. Some wont make sense. Some will happen because it’s apart of the plan. It’s not a closing door think of it as a way to divert your energy on something better. You’ll always think “It’s not the right time or you’re not ready” But time isn’t linear. So there’s no “right” time. And don’t let anyone make you second guess your worth.

Before you go, what is one piece of advice you would give to women out there who are looking to change their lifestyle through fitness?

Take it one day at a time. The scale is useful. But put more weight on how you feel. Take before and after photos. It’s ok to take rest days. It’s ok to have a cheat meal. As long as you’re eating well 80% don’t worry about it! Photos of others making progress is good motivation but don’t let it consume you. You’re a whole other person with different physiology and stressors. Be patient! If you’re likely to do better in groups then join a class or a support group online. It’s so useful in the beginning.
